Finnish architecture firm, Architects Rudanko+Kankkunen, designed this brightly colored school in Cambodia. The two-story Sra Pou Vocational School, built with locally sourced materials, also provided people in the community with construction training during the building process.
Built entirely by hand, the open-air design is constructed from locally sourced handmade red bricks, and features a natural ventilation pattern that also allows for natural daylight to illuminate the interior.
“The aim was to teach people how to make the most out of the materials that are easily available, so that they can apply the same construction techniques for their own houses in the future,” explain the architects. “The whole school is hand-made: no machines or prefabricated parts were used in the building work. This allowed employing many people from the community, and it kept all techniques simple and transferable.”
Sra Pou Vocational School is also home to a charity working to help local people find means of employment. The vibrant space operates as a focal point for the community.
Architecture students Hilla Rudanko and Anssi Kankkunen conceived the Sra Pou building project during a university course in 2010 and the school was built in early 2011. The talented duo have since set up an architectural firm - Architects Rudanko + Kankkunen which is part of the Finnish humanitarian architecture organization NGOUkumbi.
