Forty years ago, Pvt. McKinley Nolan vanished in Vietnam on the Cambodian frontier. Some say he was captured, some say he was a traitor, others claim he was killed in the Khmer Rouge genocide. Back in Washington, Texas, his family tells stories of him before he left for war. Then in 2005 a Vietnam Vet sighted McKinley alive near Tay Ninh, Vietnam.

We follow Nolan’s family as they try to discover the truth of his disappearance. They hope he is still alive, even though the US Army claims he was radicalized and “went native,” joining the Viet Cong, and was later murdered. Their haunting journey takes us from the Texas countryside, to the jungles of Vietnam and killing fields of Cambodia, tracing McKinley’s last known steps for answers.

What emerges from the conversations and the archival footage of the war is a stirring, emotional exploration of war, memory, and love and the hope for atonement for all involved in the mystery.
