The Children of Bassac troupe of young adult dancers from Phnom Penh in Cambodia will perform at Watkinson School, 180 Bloomfield Ave. in Hartford on Sunday April 17, at 7 p.m..
Children Of The Bassac_Monkey.jpgThe performance will feature 10 dancers lead by Master Artist Ieng Sithul as they perform a combination of ancient classical and folk dances in full costume with traditional technique.
The Children of Bassac dancers performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 2008 and recently completed a season of weekly dance performances at the National Museum in Phnom Penh.
The troupe is supported by Cambodian Living Arts (CLA), a non-profit organization established in 1998 by Arn Chorn-Pond, a survivor of the Khmer Rouge genocide.
Ticket sales will benefit CLA in its efforts to improve the daily lives of students and masters, many living in poverty, by providing opportunities for education, employment and travel.
The group will be visiting over 10 schools in the Northeast including Watkinson in partnership with the Connecticut-based organization, Creative Connections.
By performing at school assemblies, leading workshops, and participating in art and music classes in American schools, they aim to celebrate, share and preserve traditional Cambodian music and dance, much of which was lost during the reign of the Khmer Rouge from 1975-1979 when an estimated 90% of Cambodia's performing artists were killed.
Tickets to the performance are $30. Patron tickets which include the pre-performance reception are $75. The pre-performance reception will include: Khmer cuisine, the sale of Cambodian crafts and an opportunity to meet the Cambodian dancers, Arn Chorn-Pond and Phloeun Prim, Executive Director of CLA.
