Activist Veera Somkwamkid and his secretary, Ratree Pipatanapaiboon, have signed petitions asking the Cambodian monarch to grant them royal pardons after being imprisoned for nearly two months in Phnom Penh.

Chavanond Intarakomalyasut, secretary to Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, yesterday unveiled the pair's latest move _ which contrasts with what Veera's group, the Thai Patriots Network (TPN), says they are doing.

The network is calling for an appeal against the Phnom Penh Municipal Court's Feb 1 verdict jailing Veera for eight years, and Ratree for six years, after they were found guilty of illegal entry and espionage on Dec 29.

Mr Chavanond said their petitions will be forwarded to the court and Prime Minister Hun Sen for consideration.

Hun Sen earlier cited a Cambodian law that demands two-thirds of a jail sentence be served before a pardon can be granted by King Norodom Sihamoni.

Former TPN legal adviser Nathaporn Toprayoon said Veera, who earlier vowed to take his fight to the Supreme Court after his bail request was denied last month, decided to change tack after a talk with his mother.

Many Khmers are still in Thai jails for illegally crossing into Thailand. Cambodia should consider exchanging these Thai prisoners with all Khmer prisoners in Thailand.
