Bülent Arınç addressed Turkish and Cambodian businesspeople at TUSKON’s forum yesterday in the Southeast Asian nation’s capital Phnom Penh.

Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç said on Monday that Turkey’s widely praised role as a bridge between East and West is also contributing to both civilizations economically.
In an address to Turkish and Cambodian businesspeople at a forum organized by the Turkish Confederation of Businessmen and Industrialists (TUSKON) yesterday in Phnom Penh, the capital of the Southeast Asian nation, Arınç said, “Turkey is now the East’s gateway to the West and West’s guide to the East.”
During his speech, he lauded the economic performance Turkey has shown since 2002, the year Arınç’s Justice and Development Party (AK Party) came to power with a landslide election victory, and added that this success has helped Turkey to bolster its unique cultural and geographical position between the East and the West. “Thanks to the high performance it has shown for some time, Turkey has become an extraordinarily rising economy on an international scale and Europe’s sixth and the world’s 16th largest economy.
The $36 billion export volume in 2002 reached $132 billion in 2008, [almost] quadrupling in six years and showing that it is the engine of the country’s growth,” he said.
Arınç travelled to Cambodia on Sunday with a large delegation that included businesspeople from the fields of construction, textiles, iron and steel production and tourism. He said TUSKON’s Turkish-Cambodian Trade and Investment Forum is an “important step forward” to take the best out of the present cooperation opportunities of the two countries. In that regard, Arınç noted that the Asia-Pacific strategy Turkey adopted in 2005 has been renewed at a national and sector level each year and “is effectively implemented today.”
As part of this visit, Arınç met with his Cambodian counterpart, Sok An, as well as Cambodian Minister of Trade and Commerce Cham Prasith on Monday.
After opening the Turkish Zaman University in Phnom Penh, Arınç travelled to neighboring Vietnam.
