BANGKOK, Feb 5 (MCOT) -- Concerns over ongoing bloody clashes at the disputed Thai-Cambodian border, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva (pictured) on Saturday called for an urgent meeting with senior security and international affairs experts, the acting government spokesman said.
Panithan Wattanayakorn, deputy secretary-general to the prime minister, said the meeting would start at about 1pm at Government House.
The meeting was organised following a fresh clash between Thai and Cambodian soldiers which began Friday and is still continuing near the disputed Preah Vihear temple.
Mr Panithan said Saturday’s fighting occurred due to a misunderstanding on unclear border demarcation and the clash should serve as a “lesson which needs to be rectified” by both sides.
He said negotiations will be held later Saturday by senior Thai and Cambodian soldiers.

The briefing is scheduled to start at 3.30 p.m. and a press conference is to start an hour later.
Both Cambodia and Thailand are members of ASEAN.
Concerned that members of the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) would move to the Cambodian embassy and create trouble there, more than 150 anti-riot policemen are now stationed around the premise.
Also, officers have set up three checkpoints near the embassy to provide round-the-clock security, but so far no untoward incident has occurred, police said.
PAD members have been camping at Ratchadamnoen Nok Avenue in central Bangkok since January 25 demanding that Thailand withdraw from the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, scrap the three memorandums of understanding signed between the Thai and Cambodian governments and expel Cambodians in border areas the group claims belong to Thailand.
The group has set Saturday as the deadline for the government to respond positively otherwise they would step up the intensity of its anti-government rally. (MCOT online news)
