Thai army chief seeks end to Cambodia border clash

BANGKOK
Fri Feb 4, 2011

Feb 4 (Reuters) - A clash beteween Thai and Cambodian troops in a border area on Friday "seems to have been a misunderstanding", Thailand's army chief said, adding that he was in talks with his Cambodian counterpart to stop the fighting.

"It seems to have been a result of a misunderstanding. Right now there is ongoing talks between army chiefs on both sides," Thai army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha told reporters.

Witnesses said fighting in the area had stopped.

Thai and Cambodian soldiers earlier exchanged fire for several hours in a 4.6-sq km (1.8 sq mile) disputed area around Preah Vihear temple, a jungle-clad escarpment claimed by both Southeast Asian countries and the scene of sporadic, deadly clashes in recent years.

Cambodian police said two Cambodian soldiers had been killed and two wounded. Five Thai soldiers had been captured, said Thai army spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd. (Reporting by Ambika Ahuja. Editing by Jason Szep)

Anything being reported from Bangkok rarely said Thai soldiers get kill, except captured or wounded. The reporting by Bangkok was a lie to cover up the effect of this clash. I don't believe that no Thai soldiers were killed during several hours of fighting. Last time when there was fighting, much more the number of Thai soldiers killed than reported.

Whatever the case, my deepest condolences to the 2 Khmer soldiers. Their deaths brought great sadness to us all as Khmer. Their deaths were not gone un-notice. They were very brave heroes who were willing to sacrafice their lives to protect our nation from a heartless enemy. My deepest sadness for the family and relatives. May their spirits find peace and reincarnate to a life where there is no pain and sorrow. May lord Buddha bless them.

Cambodian soldiers reported seeing many corpses of dead Thai soldiers when they captured Thai positions. At least 7 Thai soldiers have been reported killed, 2 Thai tanks destroyed.

Yes there is a lot of misunderstandings on Thai side. Abhisit said ICJ gave only old stones back to Cambodia and Khmer still owe the rent of the soil beneath the Temple. Oxford dean, please raise your standard entrance exam for your foreign students especially if they come from Thailand.
