Khmer-Thai conflict: No permanent resolution soon

By Mara M.

I think the border situation will not have a permanent resolution or end any time soon. And the Thai maybe know about this. Here are the potential reasons: I wish that I am having a wrong premonition about this border issues with the Thais.

Per ASEAN's resolution during their meeting on Feb. 22, 2011, parties agreed for bilateral talk between Cambodian and Thailand in the third country with a third party witness, that is good if I hope, that the two parties ultimately reach their agreements and their differences, what if they won't; the third country and third party witness will be obsolete.

Secondly, they agreed to hold a permanent ceasefire, that is good for now.

Thirdly, Cambodian and Thailand accused each other of initiating the shooting during the clashes, even we all know that the Thais has countless of reasons of provoking the shooting and other acts. So, the meeting agreed that they will put in place of both sides of ASEAN's Observers to monitor the troops movement and the situation in general around the vicinity, that is good, but how long can those observers can be put in those area?, and who will assure that both sides will not start shooting again, once the observers leave the area. And the situation will back to square one again.

I wish I am deadly wrong of my anticipation.

There will be no permanent solution. Period.

What Cambodia should do is to improve economic growth and streghten national defense. Whenever Cambodia economy is comparable with Thai, the conflict will go away. To grow economy, Cambodia should not rely heavy on foreign donors especially China. Cambodia should increase productivity and exports to international markets. To achieve it, Cambodia should invest on human capitals as much as possible.

End

The main problem is the Cambodian government or one person in general (Hun Sen). He is playing political points with this situation. Hiding the eastern problem with the west. Thailand is not a big problem. That can be solved through third parties immediately.

Hun Sen should have put international observer from the beginning. That way we can prove to the world who is the real aggressor. Thailand has a lot to lose with their international image. Cambodia should ask China to put pressure on Thailand. Favor for a favor. Many ways for Cambodia to play with their card.

Thailand will not stop bullying Cambodia as long as Cambodia is still poor and weak economically and militarily. As we can see even now, after Thailand agreed to the deployment of Indonesian observers, Thai PM still threaten to use force against Cambodia. Cambodia must take this case to international court.

A réfléchir !
