[Connecticut] Local Effort To Build A School In Cambodia Will ‘Rock’ This Friday

A performance this Friday, February 25, by The Sean Fleming Band at The Fox Hill Inn, Brookfield, from 7 to 11 pm, will raise money for the now-under-construction Newtown Village School in Cambodia.

The event is a fundraiser for the Two Schools One Song effort, which is a group of Newtown High School students, unaffiliated with the high school, that raised money to build the school for children in rural Cambodia through fundraising efforts last year. This year, the group is hoping to raise enough money to buy books, supplies for the school, and fund a position for an English teacher.

After being inspired by the book Half the Sky — Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, last year Two Schools One Song exceeded expectations and raised $15,000 to build the school in Cambodia, through the American Assistance for Cambodia program. Through the program, the World Bank and Asian Development Bank match donations of $13,000 to build a school in Cambodia for $26,000. Money raised beyond the original $13,000 is not matched by the program, but it is used to pay for teaching positions, books, computers, and more.

Once completed in April, the school will be named the Newtown Village School. Construction on the project began in December in the Cambodian province of Kampong Thom. The school will have five classrooms with the capacity for 100 students, none of whom have ever attended school, according to Two Schools One Song.

Friday's fundraiser will also help to raise money for a garden and two drinking wells at the school's location to help the entire village.

Program coordinator and parent Kate Sclafani said this week tickets will be available at the door for the event or by order for $75. To buy tickets in advance, call Kate Sclafani at 203-426-9729 or Maggie Conway at 203-426-4774.

"It should be really fun," said Ms Sclafani, "because we'll have the gambling tables and the band."

Along with the gambling area, a silent auction will also be held during the event. Ms Sclafani said items to be auctioned include a manicure, pedicure, and facial gift certificate for Spa Mianra on Main Street, an Xbox 306 donated by Pepsi, a number of baskets, and many other items. Everything in the auction was donated by the students' parents or friends. Ms Sclafani said, along with other helpers, Liz Luzietti and Christina Wright were essential in effort to hold a silent auction.

The Newtown High School students involved in this project are: Maggie Atkinson, Sarah Attanasio, Leah Barrett, Krysta Gates, Lauren Hutchison, Jill Jagoe, Emma Kingsley, Sean Maher, Will Northrop, Kelly O'Connor, Megan Preis, Dan Sclafani, Emily Teri, Lewis Thompson, Nick Wright, Stephen Conway, Clare Donnelly, Zoe Eggleston, Abby Fagerholm, Kimmy Gates, Anna Grillo, Sally Martinelli, Courtney Preis, Jane Sclafani, Emily Sherman, JP Blanco, Ellen Atkinson, Jenna Calandro, Lindsey Jagoe, Samantha Luzietti, Emily Maher, and Erica Thill.

Anyone unable to attend the concert who is interested in donating to the effort can also go to www.cambodiaschools.com and click on Rural School Project. The Newtown Village School is 494.

For further information about purchasing tickets or about donating to the effort call Kate Sclafani at 203-426-9729 or Maggie Conway at 203-426-4774.
