Cambodian Jasmine Revolution (Pakdevot Phka Mlis Khmer/Asia)

By Davan Long

OMG… Here we go again. The last time I heard the word “Pakdevot”, I lost my father. My entire family and I along with millions of our people almost died of starvation, and the Nation was on the verge of disappearing from the World map. For those of you who are fortunate enough not to have lived through the Khmer Rouge era, I would humbly urge you to consider your choice with utmost diligence. Beware of what you’re getting yourselves into.

For some caring compatriots still living abroad, ask yourselves this question: “Would you make the same decision if you and your family have to live with its consequence in Cambodia, like the majority of Cambodians who have no where to go in the event of a civil war?

This is not to say that change is not warranted, but simply to point out the mistakes from the past. We had high hope and expectation for changes, and repeatedly they turned out to be disastrous for the people and the country. Millions of people, myself included, are still emotionally traumatized by a series of painful events resulted from those changes.

For any change to be beneficial, especially for a small country like ours which is surrounded by large neighbors, it has to be gradual and followed by an orderly transition period. This is rarely the case for any “Pakdevot” I have lived in, seen or read so far.

Fraternellement,

Davan Long
