Border clashes hit trade

Trade along the Thai-Cambodian border is less lively than usual since troops from the two countries began fighting last Thursday.

Trat border police officer Uthit Chotecharoennan said on Monday the number of Cambodians entering Trat's Klong Yai district had fallen more than 50 per cent during the past few days.

"About 30 to 40 Thai tourists and 100 to 150 Cambodian traders entered through Klong Yai today. The number is usually at least double that," Pol Capt Uthit said.

He believed the violent skirmishing between Thai and Cambodian soldiers in Si Sa Ket was the main cause of the decrease.

Reports said no tourists had tried to cross today into Cambodia's border province of Koh Kong, where casinos are located.

At least 200 people normally passed into Koh Kong each day.

The number of cargo trucks working the three main seaports along the border had also fallen off.
