Leopard Capital, an investment management firm founded in 2007 that invests in developing countries within Asia, recently acquired a 33.7 percent stake in the Cambodian microfinance institution (MFI) Intean Poalroath RongRoeurng (IPR) for an undisclosed sum.
The investment was made through the Leopard Capital Fund, a private equity fund with approximately USD 34 billion in assets that invests in companies within Cambodia. IPR will reportedly use the proceeds to fund new microloans and upgrade its information technology systems.
According to the Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX), the microfinance information clearinghouse, IPR had assets of USD 4.07 million, a gross loan portfolio of USD 3.23 million, and 3,457 active borrowers as of 2008. Leopard Capital is registered in the Cayman Islands and has offices in Hong Kong, Cambodia and Sri Lanka.
