A court in Cambodia has charged seven nationalists from Thailand, including a lawmaker from the ruling party in Thailand, with illegal entry into Cambodia while they were inspecting a disputed border area.Cambodian authorities detained the Thai nationalists on the border between southeastern Thailand and northwestern Cambodia before taking them to Phnom Penh. A court in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh then issued charges of illegal entry as well as encroaching on a military zone in Cambodia.If the group is convicted on both of these charges, they will each face as much as 18 months in prison.The prime minister of Thailand, Abhisit Vejjajiva made calls for the group’s immediate release. The group includes Panich Vikitsreth, who is a Democrat Party lawmaker. The foreign minister of Thailand, Kasit Piromya, also travelled to Phnom Penh this week in order to meet with his counterpart in Cambodia, Hor Namhong in an attempt to secure the freedom of the men.
However, Hor Namhong said that these Thai nationalists will continue to remain in custody until the legal procedures of the Cambodian justice system ran their course.
Mr Abhisit said that if Cambodia wanted to have good relations with Thailand, then it must look to find resolutions to bilateral disputes by conducting negotiations. The prime minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen, said that he didn’t expect that the arrests of the seven Thai nationalists would affect the two countries’ relationship with each other.
However, Hor Namhong said that these Thai nationalists will continue to remain in custody until the legal procedures of the Cambodian justice system ran their course.
