The Cambodian authority has taken measures in phenomenal speed in the apprehension four police chiefs, including Lt-Gen. Hun Hean and Col. Chheang Son, Brig-Gen. Samit Virak, and, lately, Lt-Gen. Moek Dara, for alleged various offences and drug violations.
Gen. Hun Hean and Col. Chheang Son, Banteay Meanchy Police Commissioner and Deputy Police Cimmissioner respectively, were sacked on 7th and arrested on 9th for alleged involvements in drug trafficking. Gen. Samith Virak, deputy chief of Logistics at the Ministry of Defence, and his wife, a major in the army, were arrested on 10th January for alleged land corruption, illegal possession of weapons and involved in subversion against the government in 2001. Gen. Moek Dara, secretary general of the National Authority for Combating Drugs, was arrested on the morning of 11th January for alleged drug trafficking.
The latest arrest was the arrest of Lt-Gen. Poey Pel, a military general based in Siem Reap province, on Wednesday 12th January, for a number of offences, including the alleged illegal logging in the province.
Gen. Poey Pel was a Khmer Rouge defector. He has been sued by forestry officials so many times in regard to illegal logging in Siem Reap province and the land-grabbing of 2 sq. kilometres of villagers' land in Prey Choam Forest in Knar Rongveas village, Khun Ream commune in Banteay Srey district of Siem Reap province.
During the raid on his house in Siem Reap on Wednesday morning, military police confiscated one AK-47 automatic riffle, one Trooper 4-wheel drive, one pair of his captain insignia/stripes and one pair of a lieutenant general's military insignia/star from his house.
The Kampuchea Thmey Daily reported that Poey Pel has been charged with faking his military ranks and impersonating a lieutenant general. However, the court hearing date has not been set yet.
