Luxury hotels in the tourist city of Siem Reap have closed doors in drove despite a steady increase in tourism to the city and a prediction that the number of tourists will reach 4 million by 2015.

The latest hotel to fall victim is a 4-star Hotel City Royal which announced the temporary closure in October and had just announced that it will close for good today, 17th December, leaving 70 local staff without pay and entitlements. The city's other 4-star Princess Hotel and Nokor Reach Hotel had also closed their doors permanently due to a decrease in occupancy.

Cambodia has received more than 2 million international tourists every year of which the majority visited the ancient temples in Siem Reap.

Currently, Cambodia has 454 hotels comprising 23,349 rooms. Of the 454 hotels, 159 are in Phnom Penh which comprised 6,920 rooms, the coastal city of Sihanoukville has 44 hotels with 1,771 rooms, Siem Seap has 120 hotels with 8,763 rooms. Among the 120 hotels in Siem Reap, 8 of them are 5-star hotels.

Figures from the Ministry of Tourism has seen the number of international tourists increased markedly in the last few years. The country’s minister of tourism, Tong Khon, said recently that the number of foreign tourists visiting Cambodia in the first nine months of 2010 had risen nearly 15 percent to 1.8 million from a year ago, yet hotels have closed doors in drove due a fall in occupancy.
