PHNOM PENH, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of Asian political parties Thursday unanimously were committed to playing a greater role in regional and international affairs and to coping with the rising energy needs to support economic growth and tackle environmental issues which arose as a result of this faster development.

They also highlighted their collective efforts at regional and global level in order to ensure global peace, political stability as well as balanced economic and social development.

The group promised to respect human right as well as encouraged women and young political leaders to play role in the areas of economy, energy and environment.

Government leaders and politicians comprising 89 Asian political parties from 36 countries, along with international observers and experts are meeting in Phnom Penh from Dec. 1-4 at the 6th General Assembly of International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) under the theme "Asian Quest for a Better Tomorrow", which covers the issues of "economy, energy and environment.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said in his opening speech that"Asian leaders are struggling to strike a balance between economic growth and environmental protection agenda though we are committed to upholding the principles of sustainable development."

Hun Sen wanted to see Asia to be less dependent and to expand its economic growth base through diversifying the drivers of recovery from export led growth and enable a larger role for the private sector, which falls in line with the concept of "Green Economy".
