They deliberated on opportunities to install more than one million biogas plants in about 15 countries in Asia by 2016 including innovative programmes in P.R. China and India.

During the opening session, remarks were delivered by representatives of ADB, GTZ, SNV, while the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry (MAFF) H.E. Mr. Om Kimsir formally opened the workshop. Mr. Kimsir spoke of Cambodia’s commitment to the National Biodigester Programme; reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to set up a market-oriented biodigesters sector which would provide an indigenous, sustainable energy source. “[We are] aiming to achieve the construction of 18,400 plants from 2006 to 2012”, he explained.

Ms. Karin Schelzig Bloom, Officer-in-Charge of the Cambodia ADB Resident Mission expressed her appreciation of the workshop during her speech. She said, “I would also like to commend SNV for their long-standing commitment to developing biogas programs in Asia and to achieving more than 330,000 domestic biogas installations in 7 Asian countries since 1992. ADB has been proud to partner with SNV to support national biogas programs in Viet Nam and most recently in Bhutan, through a new project approved just last month”.
