The Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) said the U.S Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has promised to look into its request for her intervention in bringing its leader Sam Rainsy back into Cambodia from exile after he was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for allegedly uprooting border posts and spreading disinformation.
The SRP claim was made in a news conference after 4 of its MPs and 2 MPs from the Human Rights Party had met Mrs. Clinton at the U.S Ambassador's residence on Monday, 1st November, afternoon.
The SRP members said during the meeting, they had raised 5 important issues with Mrs. Clinton. Those issues are human rights abuses in Cambodia, forced evictions of people from their homes and lands, the issue of the (non)independence of the Cambodian judiciary, the issue of Mr. Sam Rainsy's case and the issue of free and fair elections in Cambodia.
The SRP said Mrs. Clinton said she will monitor all the issues raised. The party is confident that its leader Mr. Sam Rainsy will be allowed to return home after the visit of Mrs. Clinton to Cambodia.
