Prime Minister Hun Sen has signed a permit to award oil and gas exploration rights to an unnamed Vietnamese company during the visit of Vietnamese PM Ngueyn Tan Dung to Cambodia on 15th November to explore oil and gas on a number of overland sites around the Tonle Sap Lake. The deal was confirmed by Cambodian Minister of Information Khieu Kanharith. "Samdech (Hun Sen) said that when other countries have frozen their investments in Cambodia, Vietnam had increased its investments in Cambodia. This is an opportunity for Cambodia to create jobs and it is also an opportunity for a number of technology transfers to Cambodia that we must welcome", he said.

At present, cambodia has awarded oil and gas exploration rights to a number of foreign companies, including the American oil giant Chevron, China's CNOOC, France's Total, Korean and Japanese companies to explore oil and gas off the coast of Sihanoukville.

Vietnam has invested heavily in Cambodia in recent years in banking, telecommunications, hydroelectricity and agriculture. Currently, Vietnam is building Sesan II Dydroelectric Dam in north east Cambodia and was awarded 10,000 hectares of agricultural lands for rubber plantations, and Vietnam hopes more agricultural lands will be warded to Vietnamese companies in the coming months.
During his meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Vietnamese PM Nguyen Tan Dung has also urged Vietnam and Cambodia to speed up border demarcations after increased accusations from Cambodian border critics and opposition parties of ongoing encroachments by Vietnam. Mr. Ngueyn also thanked Prime Minister Hun Sen for helping to facilitate Vietnamese businesses in cambodia as well as for looking after the Vietnamese immigrants living in Cambodia.
