[UN chief] Ban stresses KR tribunal’s importance

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has affirmed that independence is paramount for the Khmer Rouge tribunal, a day after Prime Minister Hun Sen told him the government would not allow further investigations by the UN-backed court.

Ban’s comments came following a tour of Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum on the final day of his three-day visit to the Kingdom, during which he also visited the Cambodian-Russian Friendship Hospital before departing for Vietnam.

“This is an international judicial process, so this is a decision to be made by the court,” Ban said.

The UN head said he had discussed the issue of further investigations with Hun Sen and Deputy Prime Minster Sok An multiple times over the course of his trip.

“I can tell you that the government of Cambodia is committed to completion of process, and the United Nations will discuss this matter with the international community, particularly donors,” Ban said.
