Mobilizing The Museum

A Soviet-made T-55 tank is seen on a ship prior being unloaded at Preah Sihanouk port, about 230 km (142.9 miles) west of Phnom Penh September 20, 2010. Cambodia has bought 44 APCs and 50 new T-55 tanks as part of the country’s effort to “strengthen sovereignty” following the tension with Thailand over the World Heritage listed Preah Vihear temple since 2008, the pro-government newspaper Rasmei Kampuchea Daily reported. Cambodia recently received 50 Russian T-55 tanks and 44 BTR-60 wheeled armored personnel carriers. Both vehicle types were introduced in the 1950s. The BTR-60 is a ten ton vehicle with a crew of three and eight passengers. It has a small turret armed with a 14.5mm machine-gun. There is also a 7.62mm machine-gun. Over 27,000 were built, before production ended in the 1970s. The armor provides protection from most machine-gun bullets and shell fragments.

The T-55 is a 40 ton vehicle that was the ultimate development of the World War II T-34. Armed with a 100mm gun, as well as a 14.5mm and two 7.62mm machine-guns. Over 90,000 were produced (even more than the T-34) before production ended in the 1980s. The crew of four is not well protected from anti-tank weapons, and the 100mm gun is largely useless against modern tanks. But against civilians, the T-55 has proved to be effective.

Cambodia is currently confronting Thailand over a border dispute, but the T-55 is not much help there. The Thais have superior U.S. M48 and M60 tanks. Cambodia already has over 200 T-54/55 tanks and over 200 BTR-60s. But these vehicles are old and worn out. The newly received vehicles were refurbished and have a lot of years left in them.

Why are people so negative towards the T-55 and type-59 Main Battle Tanks, seriously you can upgrade like to T-55/Type-59AGM and they'll be a match (well sort-of) to the T-80U or M1A-Abrams. Be positive

I also want to add who ever wrote this article, really sucks, even if its old its still effective. So shove your negative comments about tanks up your ass. And research about weapon systems and upgrades before opening your mouth. piss poor

It is nothing other the corrupted
government to mark up the price
in order to whitewash national revenue that the Zhun Xen corrupted
official need to cover up.These Tanks
it okay for Cambodian Royal Army to
brawl around scaring Khmers with in the Kingdom. From the modern technologies war games of the 21st.
century point of view,it is obviously
worthless. It make me to recall when
Khmer fought the Viet Cong 1970,our heroic Khmer Armies used
out date guns since world war one to fight Viet Cong that they illegally infiltrating in to
Cambodian territory.Do you know
how many Khmer armies had lost their lives in the battle fields.
Think about that!.Do some researches.Don`t be so Dump!!!!!!

Hey, assfuck 2:04am....do you know how many Viet Cong slaughtered in the battlefield by the Khmer Rouge from 1979-1990, 60,000 plus gooks bastards. Let me repeat, that 60,000 Viet Cong gooks. The Viet Congs had it lucky because the Khmer Rouge didn't have the T-55 battle tanks or the BTR-60. If they did, those Khmer Rouge wouldn't hesitate to ramp them into your Ho Chi Minh's ass. Don't think Vietnam don't have T-55 tanks, probably much more out dated than what Cambodia got. Whatever Cambodia got, whether T-55 or BTR-60, there is always little fucker like you who can't stand seeing Cambodia
becoming more defendable of herself. Viet Cong fucks.
