Prime Minister Hun Sen has thanked Mr. Gareth Evans (pictured), former Chancellor of Australian National University and former Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs, for his roles and contributions to peace in Cambodia in the 1980s and 1990s.
Mr. Evans, in his capacity as foreign minister of Australia, was instrumental in the formulation of a peace blueprint that have that helped Cambodia to achieve peace in 1991 after it convinced all Cambodian warring factions to come to the negotiation tables. That blueprint led to the comprehensive peace agreements on 23rd October 1991 which have paved the way for a UN-organised election in 1993.
Mr. Eang Sophalleth, assistant to Prime Minister Hun Sen, said the prime minister had thanked Mr. Evans during a meeting on 3rd September at the Office of the Council of Ministers for his selfless contributions to Cambodian peace.
Mr. Evans is in Cambodia to attend the AsiaLink Conference in Cambodia. During his opening speech to the AsiaLink Conference on 4th September, Prime Minister Hun Sen had praised and paid tributes Mr. Evans for helping Cambodia to achieve peace. Mr. Evans had reciprocated by praising Cambodia and Prime Minister Hun Sen for achieving national reconciliation and economic developments since he helped broker the peace in 1991, said Mr. Eang Sophalleth.
