Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has accused Cambodia of violating the 2000 MOU and encroaching of Thai territory in response to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen's letter to the UN three days ago which accused Thailand of wanting to cancel the same 2000 MOU and of threatening war against Cambodia.
In a letter to the president of the UN Security Council, Mr. Abhisit also said Thailand adhered to the principle of good neighbourliness and peaceful co-existence with Cambodia. He said that he adhered to a peaceful solution to the current border problems with Cambodia and said he was misquoted by Mr. Hun Sen. "I have the honour to inform Your Excellency that my remarks as appeared in the said (Mr. Hun Sen's) letter were misquoted, taken out of context and misunderstood", said Mr. Abhisit's letter.
However, he said that the current problems with Cambodia stemmed from Cambodia's encroachments of Thai territory. "The current problems arises from Cambodia's encroachment of Thailand's territory in violation of international law, and in particular Article 5 of MOU", said the letter.
While addressing protesters on Saturday 7th August in Bangkok, Mr. Abhisit was quoted by the Thai Nation newspaper that will will use both democratic and military means" to settle the dispute with Cambodia. "About the land encroachment, we will cancel the MOU if the problem can't be settled. We will use both democratic and military means," Abhisit said, referring to the plot near the temple.
