A Thai family who has encroached on border to establish a cassava farm inside Cambodian territory has on Sunday 1st August been evicted and sent back across the border to Thailand after he used his tractor to plough the area, reports Radio Free Asia.

The report said that the family had cleared the 2-hectare area to grow cassava in Chamkar Kor village, Svay Chek commune of Svay Chek district in Banteay Meanchey province.

Mr. Oung Oeun, Governor of Banteay Meanchey province, said he had ordered the Cambodian authority to evict the Thai family from the land and sent them across the border back to Thailand. "I ordered them to stop (farming) and they have already went back to Thailand. His cassava farming did not affect anything and they have already returned back (to Thailand)", he said.

This Thai family came to clear the area to grow cassava on 22nd July. After receiving the information that a Thai family had encroached on Cambodian border, a commander of the 911 Brigade sent 10 troops to the area and ordered them to stop and return back to Thailand. "We have told their (Thai) side already. We have uprooted some cassava tree already. They cleared about 2 hectare of land and have planted cassava tree in half of the land already. Their (Thai) troops told us that their Thai people had often illegally crossed the border. They know they are wrong and didn't say anything. We asked them to sign a promise agreement that they would not do anything like this again. The promise agreement was prepared by their side which stated that they are not allowed to come to farm on the border area again. They said that they have difficulties in preventing their people from encroaching, even they have deployed the troops around the area. This is what they said to us. And border post No. 41 was a border post agreed and inspected by the border committees (from both countries)", he said.

Mr. Khu Pov, Governor of Svay Chek district, said the Thai family said there is a misunderstanding because they thought the area was a Thai territory.

Meanwhile, RFA also reported that 26 a year-old Cambodian farmer had been arrested by Thai troops near Preah Vihear while foraging for wild vegetable plants in the area. The report said that Chea Thai was arrested by Thai troops on 29th July while he and his group went picking wild edible plants in the area, got lost and had entered Thai territory by accident. At press time, he had not been released yet despite a Thai promise that he will be released after Cambodian authority had sent a written request for his release.

Recently, there are reports that many Thai families had come en masse to seize lands from Cambodian families near Boeng Trokuon in Banteay Meanchy's Thmor Puok district. Those Thai families were not arrested, but were just allowed to return back to Thailand without any punishment. On the other hand, many Cambodian people who just happened to cross the border by mistake were jailed, brutally killed and tortured by Thai troops, said the reports.
