Cambodia's Kep Province is looking for an investor for a port that links it directly with Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island, the provincial government has said.
Has Sareth, chairman of Kep Province, said the tourist port is expected to cost around US$20 million.
Kep Tourism Department director Tep Houm said the port will help take tourists to ideal resorts in Phu Quoc, which lies off the Mekong Delta’s Kien Giang Province, in around one hour and a half on ferry boats.
Phu Quoc is expected to receive 2-3 million visitors in 2020, with 35-40 percent of them foreigners, according to Vietnam Ministry of Transport.
Kep Province has also been a tourism hotspot in Cambodia. In the first half this year, the province received more than 409,600 visitors including nearly 50,200 foreigners, compared to around 277,000 visitors and nearly 5,000 foreigners during the same period last year.
Sareth said the province disagreed with Japanese investor Rotong Development Group about the location of the port.
The group wanted to build the port in downtown Kep where it is crowded and the water is deep but Kep officials want to put the port five kilometers away, as it would be convenient for the province’s further development.
Sokhom Pheakvanmony, a Cambodian senior transport official, visited the province last week, but has not made a decision on the port's location.

khmer people please dont use PHOU KOK....keep khmer word for young generation (sdach KTEY SIHAMONI and Kvack HUN SEN sign kosh TRAL to YUON)
8:16 am, I feel your bitterness. I'm also bitter about losing this part of Cambodia's territory. This Cambodia's largest island Koh Tral was signed away by Ah Qwak Hun Sen to Youn for undisclosed reason. When we argue with Youn, they said that its our stupid government false for giving away land or island to Vietnam. Youn also said the same thing about Kampuchea Krom land. They think our king just simply gave it away. Youn blame Khmer for what we lost...can you imagine that. Just like any thief, it will not know what is right or what is wrong, or care whose belonging belongs to. If that thief wanted it bad enough, it will take it and it will feel no guilt about it. When ask about, it will denied stealing from anyone.
Kohs Trall Island is at the mouth of Sihanoukville province of our country,it was our Island. The Vietnamese ripped away from the heart of our Cambodian People, let never forget our wonderful island. Why is our government and country continued to lose territory and property to YOUN. In South China Sea, the Paracel Islands, some of the islands were occupied by the Chinese and the Vietnamese claimed theirs. There were several incidents between the twos. I wish that our Cambodian government more persistence in claiming of the territory loss to neighboring countries.
Koh Tral was a Khmer island, but, like Kampuchea Krom, was ceded to Vietnam by the French government in 1949.
King Ang Doung and his agreement with the colonial French stated that Koh Tral is the territory that belong to the mainland Cambodia; however; Vietnam wanted to incorporate that island as part part of Cochinchina or Kampuchea Krom, which later was signed away by the French to create two states of Vietnam, north and south Vietnam. Basically, Vietnam wanted as much territory as she can grab from Cambodia. It is false to say Koh Tral is part of Vietnam. According to the international rule of border demarcation, if straight line is drawn through Koh
Tral between Cambodia and Vietnam, Koh Tral would be divided into two sections, 25% Vietnam and 75%
Cambodia. After a sudden and mysterious death of King
Ang Doung, young Prince Sihanouk became the ruler of
Cambodia, the issue of Koh Tral was never brought
forward when the French signed away Kampuchea Krom in 1949. Without proper negotiation or agreement with Cambodia, Vietnam claimed Koh Tral as part of her territory but Koh Tral is technically still part of Cambodia.
Khmer Rouge reclaimed the island on their initial offensive against communist Vietnam in late 1970's. It remains as Cambodian's territory until Vietnam occupation of Cambodia and the coming to power of Hun Sen. In early
1980's, Koh Tral was basically handed over to Vietnam .
Vietnam quickly installed military base, populate the island
with Vietnamese, and given a new name to the island so to sound as though the island is part of Vietnam's territory.
