Biogas plant planned for Cambodia

Bioenergy News

In southern Cambodia the Mong Reththy Group has signed a memorandum of understanding that could see the construction of a biogas plant in Preah Sihanouk province.

The plant will convert the waste of 5,000 pigs into 270 kilovolt amperes (kVA) of electricity, which the facility will consume on-site.

According to farm owner Mong Reththy Germany bank KfW Bankengruppe is funding the project, although he did not disclose the amount. ‘KfW will finance the electricity generation and I am responsible for the pig farm,’ Reththy said.

The biogas generation facility will cost in the region of €5 million (€3.8 million) to erect and is expected to be completed by September this year.

A spokesperson for KfW explained: ‘Uncontrolled livestock waste management contributes to significant air and other pollution in the vicinity of the farms.’
