A senior opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) official has said on the afternoon of Monday the 12th July that the SRP will week a meeting with Mr. William Burns (pictured), U.S Under-Secretary of State, during his visit to the kingdom on 17th July to discuss about a wide range of issues affecting Cambodia, reports Cambodian Express News.

Mu Sochua, a senior SRP MP, said the party plans to discuss about human rights issues and the deterioration of democracy in Cambodia, the independence of the judiciary, land grabbing as well as the reforms of the electoral system in Cambodia. The SRP said the issue of Mr. Sam Rainsy's exile and Mu Sochua's defamation case with Prime Minister Hun Sen will also be discussed.

Mu Sochau said the United States was one of the 19 signatories of the Paris Peace Accords in 1991 which guarantees the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cambodia, democracy and independent political system as well as independent judicial system in Cambodia. Therefore, it has the obligation to help pushing forward of these issues.

Mt. Tith Sothea, spokesman for the Quick and Press Reaction Unit, said the government is not concerned about the SRP's planned discussions with Mr. Burns, saying that the court made its independent decisions based on concrete evidences.

Mr. Burns will pay a short visit to Cambodia on 17th July to participate in the Angkor Sentinel multi-national force military exercise co-sponsored by the United States and Cambodia. On the 18th of July, he has scheduled meetings with government officials, NGOs and human rights groups to discuss wide ranging issues, including human rights abuses and democracy in Cambodia. He was also scheduled to hand over 7 returned artefacts to Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An at the National Museum in Phnom Penh on the same day.

It is not clear if Mr. William Burns has any plans to meet with the opposition Sam Rainsy Party.
