Regional nations issue pledge on triangle development

PHNOM PENH — Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia on Friday issued a joint communique on developing the border triangle area between the three countries.

The joint communique was issued after the second four-day conference in Kratie, Cambodia between the External Relations Committees of the three countries' National Assemblies.
The Development Triangle Area (DTA) includes Dak Lak, Dac Nong, Gia Lai and Kon Tum provinces in Viet Nam; Attapeu, Saravan and Sekong provinces in Laos; and Mondulkiri, Rattanakiri and Stung Treng provinces in Cambodia.
Under the joint communiqueé, the three countries will set up a joint checkpoint border area while also launching a joint website in English, Cambodian, Laos and Vietnamese related to border issues.

This was the first time Cambodia had hosted the tri-nations conference. The first conference was held in Viet Nam last year.

In 2002, leaders of Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia reached agreement on the DTA, which aims to boost trade, tourism, cultural exchange, security and social order co-operation, as well as poverty reduction in the three nations.— VNS
