Former Cambodian King donates to China's flood-hit provinces

Ex-King Sihanouk had a special relationship with China for 54 years and maintained his official residence in Beijing for 40 years. He is seen here with his wife being visited by China's State Councillor Tang Jiaxuan at his Beijing home.

BEIJING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Former Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk donated 50,000 U.S. dollars in his own name to China's flood-hit areas, Chinese Foreign Ministry said here Monday.

The king sent a letter to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao expressing his concern for people in the affected areas last Wednesday, said the ministry.

Since the beginning of July, torrential rains and severe flooding have left 146 people dead, 40 missing and evacuation of more than 1.3 million people in 10 provinces, mostly along the Yangtze River, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

The Thai government last Friday gave 60,000 U.S. dollars to help with flood relief efforts in south China.

Our King seem to really care about Chinese (water flood) where at home our poor people are being flooded (abuse flood) by its own gov (our father king does not say a word). How sad this is!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Sihanouk donated to the Cambodian victims as well when there were natural disasters. I think Sihanouk, who have called Beijing his home, is trying to pay back the Chinese with what he can. But, this is a natural disaster, so it is always very humanitarian to give.

All Khmer Kings included King Sihanouk always have sympathy to other people not only Khmer people and that's why King Sihanouk is not rich like the Thai King. Remember when the Mongol invaded China, Khmer Kings helped all ethnics included Thai, Lao, Viet, Chinese etc.. to settle in Khmer land.
China and Cambodia has long good relationship as seen on the stone wall of Khmer temple.
