Tourist numbers to the famed Angkor Wat temple have gone up by 27% in the first half of this year, reports everyday.com.

Everyday.com has quoted Mr. Cheuy Chorn, chief of Siem Reap Provincial Tourism Department, as saying on 16th July that tourist figures show that in the first six months of 2010, more than 640,944 foreign tourists, a 27.42% increase compared to the same period of last year which only saw 530,280 tourists, visiting the site.

In the same period, more than 781,531 local tourists have visited the site, an increase of 11.42% compared to the same period of last year which only saw 692,267 Cambodian tourists visited the site. Mr. Cheuy Chorn said these figures come from land, sea and air entry points.

Mr. Cheuy Chorn said despite many local and foreign tourists have gone to visit other tourist sites in other provinces like Preah Vihear temple, Mondulkiri natural eco-tourism reserves and Stung Treng Irrawady Dolphin Loukout, Siem Reap still can attract substantial numbers of tourists to the many tourist sites in the province.
