17 July 2010 - The First Philippine Trade and Investment Mission to Cambodia was held on 9-10 July at the Hotel InterContinental in Phnom Penh, the Philippine Embassy in Cambodia said.
The event was jointly organized by the Embassy, the Department of Trade and Industry-Bureau of Export Trade Promotion (BETP), the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Philippines-Cambodia Business Council (PCBC), and the RFM Corporation-Corporate Export Division.
Cambodian Senior Minister and Minister of Commerce Cham Prasidh was the guest of honor at the opening ceremony.
In his remarks, the Senior Minister welcomed the participants and expressed his appreciation for the trade and investment mission, citing this as a major step towards creating mutually productive opportunities for Cambodian and Philippine businesses.
Minister Cham Prasidh invited Philippine businesses to invest in the following sectors in Cambodia: agriculture, food processing, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, information technology, and tourism.
The opening ceremony included the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the PCBC and the Cambodian Chamber of Commerce (CCC).
PCBC Chairman General (Ret.) Jose P. Magno and CCC President Kith Meng signed the MOU on behalf of their organizations.
The MOU is expected to pave the way for improved contacts and information sharing between the two business chambers.
Philippine Ambassador Noe A. Wong, Minister Prasidh, and H.E. Kith Meng presided over the ribbon-cutting ceremony that formally opened the event.
The event had two components. The first was a trade mission with 21 participating Filipino companies and business establishments while the second was an investment mission with three participating Filipino companies.
The trade mission sought to promote their companies and their products to Cambodian consumers and pursue business leads for the sale and distribution of their products in Cambodia.
The investment mission met with various officials of the Cambodian government and members of the business community to explore investment prospects.
The event drew about 1,500 visitors over a two-day period with representatives of the participating companies indicating that they were impressed by the number of visitors and the way their products were warmly received during the event.
The Embassy's co-organizers from DTI-BETP, PCBC-PCCI, and RFM Corporate Export Division hailed the event as a success and expressed hope that this would herald major improvements in bilateral trade between the Philippines and Cambodia.
Participating companies included Bel Mondo Italia Corporation; Clinica Manila; Davies Paints Philippines; In-A-Jiffy Enterprises; International Container Terminal Services Inc.; La Burda de Filipina; Lamoiyan Corporation; Lean Processes Inc.; Liwayway Marketing Corporation; Mega Fishing Corporation; Megaworld International; Q-Phil Products International; Rainiers Research and Development Institute; Refinette Cosmetic Industry; RFM Corporation; San Miguel Brewing International, Ltd.; Santeh Feeds Corporation; Splash Corporation; United Pharma (Cambodia); and Universal Canning Corporation.
San Miguel Corporation was the major sponsor for the event. Minor sponsors were: ABA Bank, Davies Paints Philippines, EZECOM, and Mfone. END
