About 2,800 workers from Man Thet Factory (spelling?) (pictured) in Ampil Leu village, Ampil commune of Kampong Siem district in Kampong Cham have today gone on strike to ask for a pay increase to $70 per month, reports Deum Ampil.
A female representative of the workers from the factory said all workers received the $11 supplemental allowance from the Ministry of Labour, but said they want to exchange that allowance to a pay increase of $70 per month instead. She said the workers will continue to strike until their demands are met.
Earlier this month, workers unions demand a $93 per month pay increase. They said the least they could accept is a $70 pay increase. However, on 8th of July, the Labour Ministry approved a garment industry's proposal of an $11 pay increase which was supported by several pro-government unions. However, the two biggest unions led by Mr. Chea Mony and Mr. Ath Thon, rejected the offer and vowed to gone on strike if the minimum demand of a $70 increase is not met.
Meanwhile, there are reports that about 1,000 workers from Sang Wu (spelling?) garment factory located in Tropeang Korng commune in Samrong Torng district of Kampong Speu province went on strike today demanding the company commences paying them the monthly salary of $61 as ordered by the Labour Ministry recently. They said if the company refused to meet their demand they will not go back to work.
Mr. Meng Sokha, administration chief of the company, said the reason there is a strike is because recently the Free Trade Union of Workers of the Kingdom of Cambodia had distributed leaflets urging workers to go on strike to demand a payrise and better working conditions.
Beside the strikes of 2,800 workers in Kampong Cham and 1,000 workers in Kampong Speu, Cambodia is today facing a bigger strike in Phnom Penh where up to 20,000 textile workers is currently on strike about pay dispute.
