About 70 Thai security forces have surrounded a site near Aranyaprathet town, set up by 204 Cambodian villagers as a temporary camp site for them to live while working as labourers in Thailand, reports everyday.com.
According to the report which quoted a Thai newspaper "The Post", the Thai security forces accused the Cambodian villagers of attempting to build a Cambodian village 4 kilometres inside Thai territory in Lao Oy village, Nong Saing commune in Arranyaprathet of Sakeo province.
The Post quoted Col. Vasu Chiemsuk, commander of the Thai border guard in the area, as saying that the security forces surrounded the "village" after receiving reports that a number of Khmer migrant workers have built a village in the area. The report said that the Cambodian villagers had built about 50 tents and huts in the area.
Many Cambodian villagers have come to work in Thailand as labourers and often were exploited and maltreated by their Thai employers. Many of them are illegal, too poor to afford rented places and often their Thai employers refused to pay them and reported their presence to the Thai authority who then arrested them, beat them and sent them back to Cambodia.
