Mr. Sourn Serey Ratha (pictured), chairman of CACJE, Cambodian Action Committee for Justice and Equality, has just issued a public statement reacting to three recent political developments in Cambodia:
1. CACJE is opposed to the upcoming visit of ex-King Sihanouk to Vietnam from 22-25 June.
2. CACJE is opposed to the proposal put forward by Mr. Son Soubert, a former member of Constitutional Council and son of former Khmer Krom and resistance fighter Son Sann, for the joint control of Koh Tral Island in Kampuchea Krom territory with Vietnam, using the European model which proposed for France and Spain to jointly control the Pyrenees region as agreed by the Emperor of France and the Spanish Resistance Movement since 1607.
3. CACJE is opposed to the proposal put forward by the governor of Kampong Chhnang province, Mr. Touch Narim, who wrote a letter to the Vietnamese Embassy in Phnom Penh promising that the Cambodian authority will provide a plot of lands plus $10,000 in cash to each of the 4,000 Vietnamese families living in floating villages who agreed to be resettled overland.
CACJE said that it is absurd to make a large compensation package to the Vietnamese settlers, who are mainly illegal immigrants, while many Cambodians have been brutally evicted from their lands without compensation.
