SilkRoad, a non-profit organization comprising students from Pinewood School, Los Altos High and other local schools, is selling T-shirts to benefit education in impoverished Cambodia.
According to SilkRoad founder Mingbo Gong, a Pinewood student, the group is dedicated to the belief that education is critical for individuals and society.
“We are not only fighting for a better future for the Cambodian children, we are fighting for the responsibility and interdependence of our generation,” Gong said.
Local students have committed to raising $13,000, which would cover the Cambodian government’s public-school registration fee, teachers’ wages and school supplies. To raise the money, SilkRoad hopes to sell 1,000 T-shirts that have 20 advertisements at $500 each on the back.
Profits go directly to American Assistance for Cambodia. SilkRoad has already raised $1,575, including in-kind support from former Los Altos Mayor Bob Grimm.
Gong said the group’s first T-shirt sale helped the survivors of China’s 2008 earthquake. In February, members sold 400 T-shirts to help rebuild damaged schools in Haiti.
