Mr. Sam Rainsy, leader of the eponymous opposition Sam Rainsy Party, has lost his appeal against Foreign Minister Hor Namhong in a long-standing defamation case brought on by Mr. Hor Namhong in a French court in 2008, reports everyday.com.
Mr. Didier alla, Mr. Sam Rainsy’s French defence lawyer, told the Phnom Penh Post on Sunday, 20th May 2010, that the French Appeal Court had decided to uphold the decision handed down by the French Magistrate Court which ordered Mr. Sam Rainsy and his book publisher to pay a small symbolic compensation amount of 1 euro to Mr. Hor Namhong for defaming him when Mr. Rainsy accused him of being a part of the Khmer Rouge murderous regime in his book. “Whatever the decision contained in the verdict of the Magistrate Court has been upheld (by the Appeal Court)”, said Mr. Didier Alla.
Last year, Mr. Sam Rainsy lost the defamation case against Mr. Hor Namhong and was ordered by the French Magistrate Court to pay 1 euro in damage compensation to Mr. Hor Namhong, but he immediately lodged an appeal against the verdict.
Mr. Hor Namhong said that Mr. Sam Rainsy had, in his autobiography, accused him of being the chief of the Boeng Trabek Re-Education Camp where many diplomats and officials from Gen. Lon Nol's Republican and Prince Sihanouk's Sangkum Reastr Niyum regimes were detained and executed by the Khmer Rouge regime.
