King Norodom Sihamoni has appointed his uncle, Prince Norodom Sirivudh (pictured), as a member of the Constitutional Council in place of some members whose term has expired, reports Deum Ampil.
Deum Ampil reported that it has just received a copy of the royal decree on Thursday 27th May which was signed by King Sihamoni on 5th May appointing Prince Sirivudh as a new member of the Council. On the other hand, the Cambodian National Assembly has just also approved the appointment of Mr. Min Sean as another member of the Constitutional Council on Thursday.
The Constitutional Council is tasked with interpreting the Cambodian constitution and has a final say on any matters and laws relating to the constitution. However, many critics said it is a powerless institution which lacks the power and the will to uphold the spirit, make decision and judgement in conformity with the true meaning of the of the constitution.
Born in 1952 to King Suramarit and a Chinese commoner from Kampot province, Prince Norodom Sirivudh is a half-brother of King Norodom Sihanouk and a popular and prominent leader of FUNCINPEC.
He completed his education from a French university with a masters degree in mathematics and economics. After the 1993 elections, he served as deputy prime minister and minister for foreign affairs. In 1995, the prince was arrested by then second prime minister Hun Sen on charges of attempting to assassinate him. With active intervention from King Norodom Sihanouk, the prince was sent into exile in France later that year. He was allowed to return to Cambodia after the 1998 agreement between FUNCINPEC and the CPP. In an effort to restructure and strengthen FUNCINPEC after years of factionalism, Prince Norodom Sirivudh, because of his popularity, was appointed by FUNCINPEC as its Secretary General in 2001. The prince is also Supreme Privy Council to his Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace.
