Cambodia hosts ASEM Meeting

Cambodia had on 6th May hosted the Asean-EU Ministerial Meeting (ASEM) in Phnom Penh in which Australia, New Zealand and Russia were admitted as its newly full member, reports Radio Free Asia.

The two-day meeting, which ended on Thursday, was attended by delegates from 45 Asian and European countries.

Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary of State of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who was chairman of the meeting, said the reason the three countries were admitted as full members of ASEM was because they had made valuable contributions to ASEM in the past. "Because we have considered these three countries had made valuable contributions to the works of ASEM. We've seen that in the past, Australia had an active and deep cooperation Asean countries througgh the framework of Asean-Australia or Asean Regional Forum as well as Asean plus Two meetings. This is because Australia had a very good economic cooperation with us...It had actively participated in the Asean works. Secondly, the same with New Zealand. New Zealand is a member of the Asean Regional Forum and a member of the Asean Summit plus Two and it is an important partner of Asean. As for Russia, we all know that it is a member of the UN Security Council and also a member of the Asean Regional Forum and in the past in had actively involved with us because it has influences in our region", he said.

Dr. Kao Kim Hourn said ASEM Meeting has focused on discussion about finding economic solution, climate change and cross-border combat against terrorism in the region as well as food and energy security.

The first ASEM was held in Bangkok in 1996. It is a a rotating bi-annually forum. Cambodia's ASEM chairmanship will end in October.
