Foreign journalists who covered the war in Cambodia between 1970-1975 returned to the country for a reunion this week… paying respects to their fellow colleagues who lost their lives in the line of work.
[Khieu Kannarith, Cambodian Minister of Information]:
"Here we pay our respect to our friends, colleagues who have left us and also we have to pay our respect to all journalists now that come here from a long, long way from home to pay respect to our friends, and also to all the journalists. That this is the solidarity between journalists around the world."
The journalists say it’s important to reflect on their past.
[Carl Robinson, Former Journalist, Associated Press]:
"What happened here not only during the war but after the war was so tragic that it was very hard for us to face that, and I think now, now that we are older and it's time to look back on our lives and reflect on what we did before, and I think a lot of us its the first time we've looked at Cambodia again, in the eye."
Sources say a total of 36 international and Cambodian journalists, photographers and cameramen were killed or went missing in Cambodia between April 1970 and April 1975. Most of the victims were from Japan.
A widow of a slain Japanese journalist came to the reunion to pay her respects to her late husband and also his friends.
[Yoko Ishiyama, Widow of Slain Journalist]:
"I pray for my husband and others (his friends)…"
About a dozen of the 40 surviving correspondents from the Cambodia War attended the reunion.
