The royalist Funcinpec Party and Nationalist Party, formerly Norodom Ranariddh Party, have on Saturday 3rd March agreed to form a political alliance in preparations for 2012 commune and 2013 national elections, report Cambodian Express News.
According to CEN, the new political alliance will be called the Funcinpec-Nationalist Alliance. CEN did not elaborate on the details of the agreements or whether the two parties will participate in the elections on a single ticket or separately.
Nationalist Party is a splinter group that broke away from Funcinpec in 2006 when Prince Norodom Ranariddh was ousted as president of Funcinpec in what he called a party coup. The Prince and his followers formed the Norodom Ranariddh Party and the party has changed its name to the Nationalist Party when Prince Ranariddh resigned from the party presidency to take up a position as the king's privy councillor in 2008.
