Leaders of ASEAN member countries are arriving in Hanoi to attend the 16th ASEAN Summit due to kick off in the city on Thursday afternoon, while Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiv canceled his trip to the summit.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen have arrived in Hanoi.
Thailand's Prime Minsiter Abhisit Vejjajiva Thursday morning abruptly canceled his trip to Hanoi for ASEAN Summit, and Deputy Prime Minister Trairong Suwankhiri will attend the meetings on his behalf, according to latest report by the Thai News Agency.
The cancellation was announced one day after Abhisit declared a state of emergency in Bangkok and some areas of the neighboring five provinces Wednesday afternoon to deal with the ongoing anti- government rally by "red-shirts".
Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa believed Abhisit's absence will not affect Thailand's participation in ASEAN. "We fully respect his decision, and we wish the stability in Thailand could be restored soon," he told Xinhua here.
