Police in Phnom Penh have on Sunday, 4th April, arrested a major general serving in the Cambodian armed forces for shooting and wounding a female tourist in a drunken shooting spree, reports Koh Santepheap.
Fifty-five year-old Maj-Gen. Tep Phirum, working in the Logistic Section of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF), has been arrested at his house in Chamkar Morn district in Phnom Penh City after he terrorised his neighbours in a drunken rage and wounding a foreign tourist in a shooting spree.
He was arrested in a joint operation between the Keng Korng II Police and the National Military Police. He was transported in a Military Police vehicle and is currently detained at the Phnom Penh Military Police Headquarter.
In recent months, powerful generals have taken laws into their own hands by committing violence against unarmed civilians. On 28th March, a brigadier general was arrested when he shot a motorcycle driver in the face after a minor traffic incident. On 11th March, a one-star general who is Deputy Commander of the Ream Naval base in Sihanoukville was arrested and sentenced to a one year suspended jail term for beating two female teachers and a 10 year-old boy who teased his 14 year-old daughter with a snake.
