Security measures to be taken during 1st Mekong River summit in Thailand

March 25, 2010

Xinhua - Special security measures will be implemented to ensure security at the first Mekong River summit, in which Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen will attend, Thailand's Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwon (pictured) said here on Thursday.

If the Internal Security Act (ISA) is invoked, its enforcement could be limited only at the venue of the Mekong River summit, Thai News Agency quoted General Prawit as saying.

"I would like to urge the anti-government protesters not to stage a rally at the summit's venue," said General Prawit.

Meanwhile, it is still not known yet about the number of security forces to be deployed at the summit's venue, General Prawit said.

General Prawit also said that he is going to discuss with army commanders to plan security measures for the summit as he will travel to supervise security operations at the summit's venue by himself.

The summit will be held in a hotel at resort town Hua Hin in Thailand's central province Prachuap Khiri Khan on April 2-5.

Ten of thousands of the protesters led by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) group have converged on capital Bangkok since March 12 to press Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve the lower House of parliament and call new election.

Hence, it is feared that they may move to stage a rally at the summit's venue since the UDD or red-shirted group has announced their rally will be prolonged.
