For further information, visit:http://3spn.cfsites.org

The Sesan, Srepok, and Sekong (3S) community-based river networks, would like to formally invite you to participate in their community media forum aimed to raise awareness of development processes and their impacts to indigenous people in the region.

Time: 8:30am
Date: Tuesday, March 16th
Location: 3S Rivers Protection Office, Banlung Town, Ratanakiri Province

Agenda
8:30 – 9:00 Representatives from local authority to present their concerns
9:00 – 9:30 Affected indigenous community to present their concern and requests
9:30 – 12:00 Field visit/ tour of affected communities

Background

The indigenous communities living along the Sesan and Srepok Rivers in Ratanakiri Province have been affected by the construction of large dams upstream in the Central Highlands in Vietnam. The 720MW Yali Falls Dam, for example, has changed the natural water flow, created riverbank landslides, destroyed crops, made boat travel difficult, reduced water quality, which has affected the health of those bathing in, and drinking from the water. Impacts have also hurt fisheries and created a decline in fish catches and species, which affects the food security of communities living along the river. Both women and men that are affected are poor and come from different ethnic backgrounds and whose livelihoods depend upon the river as the source of livelihoods and food security.

To date, details of the proposed dams have been sparse and the decision-making process highly opaque. In the upstream, downstream, and in the areas near these dam sites, the majority of the communities who have been affected, or will be affected have not received full information and have not been allowed to take part in the decision-making processes.
Your participation at this event would be greatly appreciated.

Please confirm your participation by 2pm on Monday, March 15th by contacting Mr. Meach Mean, 3S Rivers Protection Network on ph. 011 758 970.
