Police have arrested at least 12 people and netted over a thousand cubic metres of illegal timbers in recent raids across the country, reports everyday.com.

Despite the raids and arrests, many of the big fish (masterminds) behind the illegal logging have not yet been arrested and brought to court. However, on 26th March, the Siem Reap Magistrate Court had ordered the detention of Yeay Map (Fat Lady), a very influential business woman and one of the biggest traders in illegal timbers in Oddar Meanchey province on charges of illegal logging. Yeay Map was arrested on 23rd March, sent to court on 24th and was ordered detained by the court on 26th.

According to the report, Yeap Map is the 12th person to be detained after Prime Minister Hun Sen has ordered the raids on illegal timber warehouses across the country and vowed to pursue all illegal loggers, no matter who they are and what positions they hold.

In raids in Siem Reap on 26th, many illegal timber warehouses were found to be owned by many of Mr. Hun Sen's friends and financial backers, such as Oknah Sok Kong, owner of Sokimex Petroleum, Senator Lao Meng Khin, owner of Shukoku company and Pheapimex and Oknha Ang Try, owner of Tiger Beer etc. However, these people had not been arrested yet.
