Prime Minister Hun Sen (pictured) has blasted the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) for misleading the public when it claimed that Japan had frozen its funding of the Neak Loeung Bridge because the Cambodian government did not pay proper compensation to the evicted residents to make way for the bridge, reports Kampuchea Thmey.
Recently, an SRP MP, Mr Ly Srey Vina, claimed that Japan will not release the $74 million grant for the bridge construction until the evicted residents had been properly compensated. "We went all the way to Japan, but Japan refused to release this grant, they told us to resolve the eviction by providing appropriate compensation, then Japan will provide the grant”, she said.
In a speech during the groundbreaking ceremony of the construction site of National Highway Two on the 5th of January, Prime Minister Hun Sen blasted at the claims by saying that the delay in the Japanese funding was not due to compensation issue, but rather due to time it takes to study the bridge site. He said that the construction of the Neak Loeung Brige requires more times regarding the feasibility studies and other related technical issues, not due to compensation issue.
Mr. Hun Sen said the Neak Loeung Bridge will be built because it is part of the Asean Highway that connects the Asean bloc to the Kunming region in China.
