Since 1971, Dance on Camera has burgeoned into a major annual festival, displaying the cross-fertilizing of talent between the dance and cinematic worlds.
This year’s version features 20 screenings at Lincoln Center, including the latest movies about matriarchs Meredith Monk and Anna Halpern; a new film about the early years of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet; and a telling profile of a Cambodian boy, Sokvannara Sar, scouted by dance enthusiast Anne Bass and flown here to train at New York City Ballet’s school.
Central to Dance on Camera are many short films — both traditional and experimental — by artists from Canada, France, Australia, the Netherlands, Britain, Spain and Argentina; plus the hour-long “Urban Ballet,” by German cinematographers Brigitte Kramer and Jorg Jeshel, documenting cutting-edge international troupes performing in Berlin.
Closing the festival is Blackwood’s latest survey of local choreographers, curated by Times critic Gia Kourlas and including interviews and work samples from dance makers Christopher Wheeldon, Beth Gill, John Jasperse, Sarah Michelson, Ann Liv Young, Jennifer Monson and Ralph Lemon. A master at letting artists speak for themselves, Blackwood shows us these folks in action and in contemplation, providing a window into the creative process.
