Garment workers went on strikes and demonstrations to demand better pay and better working conditions.

President of the Free Trade Union of the Workers of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Mr. Chea Mony, said demonstrations and strikes by factory and garment workers in Cambodia had decreased in 2009, reports Deum Ampil.

Deum Ampil reported that in 2009, there were about 100 demonstrations and strikes have taken place in Cambodia, but that these numbers are lower than in previous years. The newspaper quoted Mr. Chea Mony as saying that the decrease was not due to improving working conditions, but it was because of crackdowns, restrictions and bans imposed by the government.

Mr. Chea Mony, however, conceded that in previous years, demonstrations and strikes did not achieve 100% satisfactory results, but only 70% of their demands. He said, however, that, without the strikes, the workers would not even achieve any of their demands from the factory owners.

He said unions and workers have no intentions of using demonstrations and strikes as a weapon to cause the government and factory owners headaches, but that they are neccessary to force the relevant ministry and factory owners to respect and properly implement labour laws.

Deum Ampil managed to reach Mr. Oum Mean, Labpur Ministry's Secretary of State, for comments but he refused to make any comments as he claimed that he is in the middle of his mission to the provinces and just switched off his telephone immediately.
