Cambodia, Thailand clash at border

By BJT

Cambodian and Thai troops have clashed at the two countries' disputed border. A senior Cambodian commander says Sunday's skirmish lasted for a few minutes, after Thai soldiers intruded upon his nation's soil.

The commander claims that Cambodian troops encountered Thai soldiers at the Choam Te Border Area, about 20 kilometers east of the country's iconic Preah Vihear Temple.

He added that his regiment fired back in self-defense, and no casualties have been reported from their side.

The altercation took place just about two weeks ahead of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen's scheduled trip to inspect the Temple and visit with troops. The five square kilometer border region has been a hotly disputed flashpoint since July 2008.
