A promoter of ancient Khmer boxing claimed that he had lost his home and ended up living inside his boxing ring because of his love for the sport and because of his love and dedication to the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP), reports Radio France Internationale.

Mr. Pen Sarin (pictured), an independent promoter of Khmer ancient martial art of Kun Khmer, said he had dedicated his life of the last 30 years to promoting this Khmer ancient martial art because he wanted to preserve it from extinction. He said he has to struggle to keep the sport going by single-handedly promoting boxing matches in the provinces at great cost and little returns. He said this is because, since the second government mandate (1998), he had used his boxing matches to help campaigning for the ruling CPP to win the elections by not charging spectators any money to watch his boxing matches. At the end, he had to sell his house to pay the boxers and other debts. Now he is homeless and had to live inside his boxing ring.

During every election, Mr. Pen Sarin said he had always organised boxing matches in every province as part of the election campaign for the CPP. "It is because I really wanted the CPP to win the election that's why I tried very hard to organise boxing matches in every province and never charged spectators any money. On top of this, I bought the T-shirts and hats that bear the CPP logo and distributed for free to the spectators, that's why I lost a lot of money because other boxing promoters had charged money from the spectators. Now, I have to sell my house to pay debts and has to sleep on the boxing ring since the second mandate (1998)", Mr. Pen sarin said.

Mr. Pen Sarin had also organised boxing matches every year to help celebrate the 7th January Day. "Every time I organise boxing matches, no one ever helped me. I manage to afford it by myself, pay boxers and other expenses by myself and most of the time I lost money", he said.

The CPP had acknowledged Mr. Pen Sarin's contributions to the CPP election campaigns and promise to try to work with him to help his boxing promotions in the future.

I think he has been brainwashed to believe that the CPP is God and spent all his money and house to help the CPP and he is now homeless.

I hope the CPP can help him to get back his house with their ill-gotten and stolen money.
